The picket signs have been put away and the rabble-rousing masses are conspicuous by their absence. Wall Street is the world’s largest stock market and it is running as smoothly as Usain Bolt does the 100 metres race, but there is a worrying trend developing on the bourses. Investors are no longer playing the markets with the kind of gay abandon that marked out their approach some time back and its not just because playing the market has become tougher to win in and more fickle than ever. It’s a domino effect of a worse kind for the market with investors lopping off stocks they own and reducing their holdings in favor of safer investments such as that provided by the bond markets.

There is a very real fear that this will remain a lingering sentiment; as they say, a crystal vase once broken can be fixed, but the cracks will always remain. This might be a lost generation of investors now that are so wary of stock declines that they won’t see the next big rally when it does come around (and it will at some time). It is a crippling fear of failure that has gripped the mind of this generation and you can blame a recessionary period coupled with high inflation or you can blame the mindset. Maybe you can pin the blame for this on both, but why even play a blame game?

Of course, two market corrections in the span of a period of 10 years means that conversation is now no longer about which stock is the one to go with and which one should be dumped like a hot potato. Almost all of them are being dumped with a vengeance and now talk is more about curtailing risk, saving cash and picking bonds over the raw charisma of stocks. Pulling cash out of the markets has been a stock in trade since the beginning of 2009, when markets first started to show signs of wobbly knees. That early weakness and the early flight of capital was the beginning of a free fall in which retail investors went scurrying for cover. Mutual funds, for long the poster boy of the stock market, has seen dollars flowing in and out of totaling up to almost a quarter of a trillion dollars since the beginning of 2008.

A quarter of a trillion; think about it.

Conservatism has well and truly set in and you can’t blame the average investor for being jumpy in the light of one of the worst downturns in the history of the stock market. Everyone wants to protect their savings and nest eggs, but it might be only years and not decades before investors return. All it needs is for something positive to happen and the masses will return. It’s almost as if you’re at the slot machine with your quarters waiting for someone to win big and those flashing lights and winning signs will get everyone to dunk their quarters into the machine. Everyone wants to win; the problem is everyone’s too afraid of losing right now.

The markets rallied on Friday, but nothing came of it. The S&P 500 was a bit flaccid, to say the least, and it is in many ways a strong reflection of sentiment across the board that is tepid and hesitant. Remember that traditionally September and October are not a good month for stocks and you have good reason to draw just an inch closer to that panic button right away. Volumes have been light and individual investors are not picking up stocks the way they used to, and that can be seen quite clearly in the mutual fund market. Here’s a simple fact; bond funds have recently attracted $25 billion while equities have seen $12 billion fly out of their hands. That is an alarming figure.

This is a clear message from investors that they don’t believe the recovery is on track and that they want to keep their money where they can keep an eye on it. Most of these individual investors have been burnt once and don’t want to get their hands burnt a second time over. It’s not just malaise at an individual level either; analysts are dubbing an increasing number of stocks as “hold” worthy and nothing more. Buy recommendations are few and far between. All of this leads us to the idea of contrarian investing. If you’re insightful enough, you already know what we’re on about. Investors tend to be wrong at the extreme end of sentiments. If a market is bearish, buy like you’ve got giants bags of money. If a market is bullish and thinks the sky is the limit, say your goodbyes and head for the nearest way out.

This is not some new-fangled concept or school of thought. It is older than you think and one even the legendary Warren Buffett follows from time to time, best personified by his advice to “be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.” Think of the dotcom bubble and how it went belly up faster than it made profits for everyone. Investors put money into an imaginary piñata so fast that it all came crashing down around them when the levee broke. $497 billion in stock mutual funds is no small amount, and this amount is only the figure invested prior to the crash in 99 and 2000. The bond market has had $480 billion poured into. While we’re not saying it too will fail, it’s a fascinating parallel case in study.

But there is a flipside to all of this. Irrationality is a silly thing, and selling Qualcomm at $450 a share must have been a relief. That is until Qualcomm suddenly soared to $700 a pop late into December. That is just another lesson in not following popular opinion. Bonds and stocks have an inverse relationship, which is why as stocks have dipped bonds have soared. More than anything keep an eye out for oil prices; black gold is a great barometer of sentiment and an indicator of any rally to come. Pick up stocks with low valuations now, because economic indicators are picking up and consumer confidence is slowly returning. It’s always the early bird who gets the worm, and you do like worms, don’t you?

After the release of private sector hiring statistics, investors reacted positively by pouring in money into the market. Stocks, on Wednesday, closed on a higher quote.

Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 44 points or 0.4%. S&P 500 index also gained 0.6 % by climbing 7 points. And NASDAQ added 0.9% or 20 points.

The major reason of rise was surprising improvement in private sector payroll statistics. People are now awaiting a major report to be released by Labor Department on Friday. Besides, the industry report says there has been growth in the service sector for the seventh month in a row now.

The pace of employment and recovery is modest. However, we are sure of one thing: at least the pace is being maintained.

Corporate companies have been showing a decent profit for two months, and it is helping the economy to relocate its position to a better place. However, weak job market is still a concern. If not improvement is seen in employment rate, the consumer confidence level would fall and recovery would be severely hurt.

Chief Market Strategist of Miller Taback & Co, Peter Boockvar says the economy is not collapsing, but it’s not growing with acceptable pace either.

Investors will have a better view of the picture when government will release another job data report before market opening hours on Thursday. The report will also talk about employment trend in retail sector, which will certainly affect retail stocks in days to come.

There was an increase of 42,000 jobs in private sector companies in the month of June. However, the market is far from being stable as many companies still continue to lay off people in order to recover from the loss. Besides, there have been planned job cuts in public and non-profit sectors as well.

Overall, there has been a sharp cut in payroll this year, and the unemployment rate has ticked up a bit, which is certainly not a good sign for the country.

When you bet against stocks’ upward movement, it’s short selling. In this method, you must borrow stocks from your brokerage company, sell them at a higher price, and buy back at lower price. You (short selling traders) can benefit only when the market or a stock declines due to unexpected consequences.

The method is of short selling stocks is quite simple. You borrow stocks from your broker by paying a small fee (administration or financing fee), and give it back after selling the stocks at higher price and buying at lower price. Thus you make a profit without investing much. Probably the below mentioned example would make things clear.

Stocks of company XYZ is being traded at $20 per share. You learn the company doesn’t have surplus stocks, thus loss is inevitable. In such situation, you must borrow around 100 share at $2,000, and sell them when the price reaches $10 due to bad news. Thus you make a profit of $1,000, without investing any capital amount.

Shorts selling stocks always works well when the market is in decline. Consequently, traders who bought banks’ shares in 2008 earned a substantial profit in the following months. However, when the market is rising, short sellers are at loss, for an indefinite period.

A disadvantage of short selling stocks is you can earn limited profits. However, chances of incurring huge loss are pretty high as stocks can fall up to zero.

Consequently, the governing body banned naked short selling in 2009 in order to avoid market turbulence, and random movements. In such king of trading, an investor thinks about covering the stock, only after he has sold the stock. Today, investor has to borrow or buy shares instantly.

If you intend to short sell stocks, you must have genuine and reliable sources who would provide insider information. You must make your move before majority of people are aware about the news. Only then one can make profit from this method. Besides, as the magnitude of loss is broad, you must have buffer funds, in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.

What’s an IPO?

IPO, also known Initial Public Offering, are shares of a company sold to public for the first time. Through such IPO’s, companies that aren’t currently listed on stock exchanges manage to receive capital for their project. As soon as it sells all their shares, and receives funds, the company gets listed on the exchange.

IPO is considered to be a good investment product, as shares are available at cheaper price. With the growth of the company, the price then keeps mounting, providing a good return on your investment. However, this investment can sometimes be a disaster, if the company doesn’t perform well. Hence, it’s imperative to take following steps before you invest your money in an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Check Company’s Background

Before you put your money in an IPO, make sure you know their business very well. Know about the business model of the company, financial status, company products, revenue generation method, and so on.

Client Base

The growth of the company depends on the clients it has. With the increase in number of clients, the business would flourish, and so would your investment return. If the company has reputable clients, it would certainly grow in future. If it is, however, struggling to get business, stay away from it.

Industry

If it’s a financial firm you are investing in, find out about the overall industry performance. You don’t have to invest in a financial company’s IPO, if you know the sector wouldn’t perform well in near future.

Lead Manager

Lead Manager is the one who takes care of the entire IPO issue of the company. Make sure you research much about the manager before you put in your money. Generally, good managers don’t undertake under-average company’s issue responsibility.

Red Herring Prospectus

Before you decide to invest in a company’s IPO, make sure you read the red herring prospectus to know about the risks involved with investing in this company.

If the company is good, you would certainly gain fro your investment. However, if, during the initial weeks, you feel it’s being traded low, restart the research process. Exit if you notice any threats.

Whether or not one invests in stock market, Dow Jones is an exchange known by majority of people around the world. Dow Jones Index is an index used to gauge the everyday performance of specific stocks. Similarly, Dow Jones Industrial Average gauges performance of 30 established US stocks, and compares current prices with previous closing. It is an average of performance of all the 30 stocks. So, if the industrial average goes down, these stocks, on an average, aren’t performing well. And if it’s up, they are doing well.

The performance is measured in points. Hence, it’s easy to gauge the magnitude of rise and fall. The question, however, is, how is it calculated. There isn’t any mystery behind it. It is calculated using a Dow divisor. In a generally average method, the sum of the parts is divided by the number of parts. Here, parts are thirty. However, they use a different figure as divisor, which was derived taking several factors into consideration.

Since the number of stocks in this average is very less, i.e. 30, even a small change in a single stock can change the average dramatically. Hence, if you want to know how a particular sector is performing, DIJA is probably not the right place to look at.

However, as argued by many, Down Jones Industrial Average cannot be considered to be representation of the stock market. If this average is up, the market would not necessarily be performing well. Although this industrial average has stocks from many different sectors, it is a combination of only large cap stocks, which definitely does not reflect the changes in low cap stocks. Others argue that the opening time of all the stocks in the average is not same. The changes, therefore, are not accurately presented.

The argument still goes on. However, over long time, it seems that Dow Jones Industrial Average moves quite similar to the direction of overall stock market. Other indices include Dow Jones Real Estate Index, Dow Jones Transportation Index, and Dow Jones Financial index. However, DIJA is one of the most popular ones.

For beginners, a stock chart is an essential tool to start investing in equities. This chart keeps updating stock movements during trading hours, helping investors gauge the fluctuations instantly. However, it become difficult for a beginners to read stock charts if they don’t possess appropriate knowledge. For them, it would simply be a bunch of colorful lines.

If, however, you are a trained observer, these lines are powerful indications of a company’s performance. For most traders, it’s a crucial tool. There are several types of stock charts used to indicate stock movements. Before we try to understand each of them, it’s important to note that these charts, regardless of their type, share similar axes. The horizontal line or x-axis indicates time, while the vertical line or y-axis talks about price movements. Hence, each chart must be read from right to left.

The simplest amongst all stock charts is the line graph. Although it’s simple to read such a graph, it usually misses out many details. They would, for instance, indicate current price change, but wouldn’t mention anything about highs & lows, or open & close of a stock.

Renko Charts and Kagi Charts are usually referred by long term investors, as they display only significant changes in a stock. This is the only reason why these charts aren’t referred by most day traders.

Day traders usually prefer extracting information from Candlestick Charts and Bar Charts. These stock charts point out minute stock movements along with other information like open and close price, highs and lows, and so on. Candlestick chart, particularly, displays precise information in an uncluttered way.

Reading stock charts, however, would only inform you about current trends. If you want to become a successful investor and earn a substantial amount over time, you will have to learn how to ascertain future trends. Sure the market is on the rise now. But what if it goes down immediately after you buy? For beginners, I would suggest you take some specialized courses and focus on maximizing profits. There are several strategies to invest in stock market, but you have to choose the one that works for you.

Gauging the performance of a company isn’t much difficult if you know certain ways and formulae used by most traders. A similar formula, debt to equity ratio, is a way to ascertain company’s value by determining its debt and assets. Hence, let us understand what does this ratio mean, how it works, and when should one use it.

Debt To Equity Ratio – Meaning

One can measure the current financial performance of a given company by calculating its debt to equity ratio. This is done by dividing the amount of liability the company has by the amount of equities it holds. The final amount derived will mention the debt to equity used by that firm to finance its assets.

Debt to Equity Ratio Formula:

Debt to equity of Company ‘X’ = Total Liabilities / Total Shareholders’ Equity

Liability, in this ratio, is not always the total amount of outstanding amount. Sometimes the amounts of long tern debt or even only interest bearing debts are mentioned instead of liability. Debt to equity ratio, however, is not only used to measure the financial performance of a company. It can also be used to find out a personal financial status.

This ratio can be made too intricate if one wants to gauge the actual value of a company. However, let’s keep it simple as of now. Simply divide the liabilities of a comaby by its assets.

How to Analyze Debt to Equity Ratio?

When the total amount of liabilities of a company exceeds the total amount of equities or assets, debt to equity ratio is higher, which definitely is not a positive sign. For an investor, this company must be avoided. Sometimes, when a company accumulates too much liability, chances are the company might find it difficult to repay resulting into insolvency. Hence, if you are investing in a high ratio company, you risk is too high.

This ratio would be 1 if total number of assets is equal to the total liabilities owned by the company. These kinds of companies are safe to invest in, as liabilities are low, which can be repaid by selling assets. So, chances of insolvency are minimal. One must, however, keep checking the ratio. If it’s rising, it’s probably time to get out of it.

When the ratio is lower than 1, total number of assets exceeds total number of liabilities, which is certainly a good sign for investors. With more assets in hand, this company would definitely invest in other areas and expand.

This ratio, however, is not the only way to gauge the performance of a company, and one must not rely only on this number. It may be different for different industries. An average debt to equity ratio of manufacturing sector, for instance, might by above 2, while that of IT companies might be 0.5.

Though not much movement was seen in the morning, most stocks jostled during the close and ended positive.
PLCM gained mainly due to its recent tie up with an Indian based corporation. FUQI, however, witnessed a fall as it failed to maintain or exceed its previous Q4 statistics. Experts believe BBI may file for Bankruptcy, hence a plunge was expected. Though HIG was low throughout the day, it observed re-bounce quite immediately after share sales were announced.

More than fundamentals, a major reason in sudden rise of the market was the Wednesday evening announcement of Japanese Federal Bank and the Federal Reserve that promised to maintain interest rates at lower figures, which they say, will drive the economic growth considerably. It’s too early to be optimistic. Reports, however, mentioned a positive sign and confirmed a fall in inflation rate.

Soft inflationary data coupled with other positive reports helped market gain toward the evening hours. According to Labor Data, the Producer Price Index fell by 0.6% in previous month, which is the biggest drop in past 7 months.

A major reason, however, that drove market upward was Japan’s decision to keep its interest rate low at 0.1% and provide funds through short-term loans. Reports continue to surprise as unemployment rate of February in the UK showed an unanticipated drop. It was the biggest fall seen since Nov 1997. Consequently, British pound gained against the euro and dollar.

After Fed’s announcement, stocks gained considerably. Dow hit the level higher than ever, since mid-January. S7P reached its highest level since Oct 2008 and closed at 1,166 gaining 0.58%. Since a month, markets in US are providing steady gains.

Though not much can be predicted about the level it will reach toward the month end, it is expected to gain on Thursday and Friday. Experts, however, are not much sanguine and they expect deflation in coming months.

A sudden plunge in a stock price, these days, doesn’t really surprise any investor as, we all are quite aware about this, the market isn’t run by fundamentalism. If it does, it depends on quarterly revenue data like EBITDA, EBIT, margins, and EPS. In short, all the data used by market to gauge the performance can be found in the income statement. It, therefore, is the most significant financial statement. The cash flow statement, however, is something that really drives the value in the market. It includes dividends as well.

Many companies this week furnished shareholders with a higher dividend.

A significant player, Myers Industries (MYE) is involved in production of polymer products for agricultural, industrial, commercial, consumer, and automotive markets. It provided a steady dividend. On March 5th, however, the company raised quarterly dividend by 8%, which totals $0.065 per share. Shareholders as of March 12th 2010 will be paid dividend by 5th April 2010. 10th March was the ex-dividend date. The new payout provides a yield of 2.52%.

An insurance firm, NYMAGIG, INC (NYM) that provides casualty and property insurance, is another company providing high dividend this week. NYM specializes in underwriting inland marine, non-marine, and ocean marine insurance. On March 5th, NYM declared increase in its quarterly dividends which will now by $0.10 per share. Shareholders as of March 31st 2010 will be paid dividend by 6th April 2010. The new payout provides a yield of 2.23%.

World’s biggest producer of wafer fabrication materials, Applied Materials (AMAT), has raised the quarterly dividend by 17%. It is now 0.07% per share. Hence, it can be said that the new payout provides a yield of 2.28%.

Medicis (MRX) manufactures and sells OTC products and prescriptions, which are used to treat dermatological diseases. This pharma company raised its quarterly dividend by around 50% totaling to 0.06% per share. Shareholders as of 1st April, 2010 will be paid dividend by 30th April 2010. 29th March is the ex-dividend date. The new payout provides a yield of 1.01%.

Cohen & Steers (CNS) is a financial company that manages portfolios of high net worth individuals and it specializes in US real estate securities, REIT’s, infrastructural equities, and preferred securities. CNS raised its quarterly dividend payment by 100%, which is now 0.10% per share. Shareholders as of March 31st 2010 will be paid dividend by 16th April 2010. 29th March is the ex-dividend date.
